Unique accessories and collectibles for the home created by South African designers, artists and handicraft cooperatives. Southern African Crafts supports small project groups that have been set up throughout the country creating employment at village level, which allows women to continue with their traditional rural way of life.
Items in the ever-changing collection include contemporary works, as well as fresh interpretations of traditional art forms and techniques. Featured artists explore the versatility of natural and recycled materials to design and create truly functional works of art.
Gilliane Zimmermann, founder and owner of Southern African Crafts, trained in ceramics at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and later at a private ceramic studio. Her interest and passion in the contemporary craft movement flourishing in South Africa and her connections to established craft cooperatives as well as up-and-coming artists, inspired Ms. Zimmermann to introduce these new and varied art forms to Switzerland. She specializes in one-of-a-kind collectibles and limited edition works discovered on her frequent buying trips to South Africa. Ms. Zimmermann is a regular exhibitor at art shows and galleries, and has been invited to design exhibits and displays for numerous events organized by civic, business and cultural groups throughout Switzerland.
